Department of Computer Science, University of Memphis

 Wireless Sensors and Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (WiSe MANet) Lab at the University of Memphis invites applications for a

 One Year Postdoctoral Research Position

The successful applicant will be involved in research, development, and evaluation of mobile health (mHealth) systems as part of several NSF and NIH project that include the NSF sponsored FieldStream project and NIH sponsored AutoSense project. In the AutoSense project (http://sites.google.com/site/autosenseproject/), a modern mHealth system has been developed that human subjects wear for several weeks in the field to collect continuous physiological measurements across a variety of sensors (e.g., ECG, respiration, accelerometers). Rich contexts such as stress, smoking, drug usage, and craving are inferred from the sensor data to enable design and delivery of novel interventions on the phone. AutoSense has been worn by 100+ subjects in the field as part of behavioral studies on smokers, drinkers, and drug users, providing 3,000+ hours of mHealth data. The FieldStream project (http://www.fieldstream.org/) addresses the theoretical foundation for field deployable mHealth systems such as personalized modeling of human behaviors to enable timely detection of stress, craving, smoking, etc. and optimization of sampling and wireless communication to maximize system lifetime.

The selected candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Santosh Kumar and will have an opportunity to collaborate with world class scientists from multiple universities and multiple disciplines (CS/ECE from CMU, Georgia Tech, UMass, UCLA, Ohio State, and behavioral scientists from Johns Hopkins, Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Memphis, and NIDA). The selected candidate will coordinate the work of students and postdocs from collaborating institutions. In addition, the selected candidate will be expected to lead data analysis from completed and ongoing user studies, and prepare manuscripts for publishing the results of these studies.

This position is for 12 months and may be renewable for the second year.

Qualifications:

1. The successful candidate will be expected to earn a PhD degree in Computer Science or a related discipline from a research university by December 2012;

2. Proven record of outstanding performance in a highly-competitive international research environment demonstrated by consistent publications in top-tier conferences and/or journals;

3. Experience in at least one area out of data mining, machine learning, mobile health, and sensor systems.
