POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE – GUT MICROBIOTA IN OBESITY

The School of Molecular Bioscience is a member of the University’s Faculty of science. A large and extremely research-active school, we have particular expertise in microbiology, molecular biology and genetics, biophysical chemistry and structural biology, nutrition and metabolism, and proteomics and biotechnology.
We are currently seeking a motivated and an enthusiastic PhD Graduate to work in the laboratory of Associate Professor Andrew Holmes. The aim of the research study is to identify associations between the gut microbial community, diet and weight loss outcomes. In this role you will carry out laboratory-based and bioinformatics research of the gut microbiome from patients undertaking dietary intervention for metabolic health and prepare these data for publication. You will also contribute towards the broader activities of the School of Molecular Bioscience. This will include:
• research supervision for postgraduate students
• lab management supervision for researchers working in the same laboratory space
• contributing as required to the school’s teaching activities.
To qualify for the role you will have:
• PhD in microbiology, molecular biology or equivalent
• DNA extraction and manipulation skills
• phylogenetic analysis of rRNA sequences skills
• experience in the preparation and presentation of scientific reports and papers
• ability to assist with the organisation and running of a microbiology laboratory.
Prior experience in bioinformatics analysis of genome sequences, biostatistics of multivariate data sets, and familiarity with research literature on the gastrointestinal tract microbiota will be highly regarded, as will prior teaching experience.
The position is full-time fixed-term for three years and is subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. Membership of a University approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for new appointees.
Remuneration package: approx. $92K p.a. (including Level A6 base salary of $78k p.a., leave loading and 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation).
