Description

Description: The researcher will be part of the EU Marie Curie Initial Training Network 'LegumePlus'. This network is a 4.1 million euro project and provides multi-disciplinary and inter-sectoral research and training activities within Europe on legumes containing bioactive compounds. A total of 14 ESR and 2 ER fellows will be trained in research and complementary skills. The objective is to harness the potential benefits of bioactive legumes for ruminants and the environment. LegumePlus will investigate the mechanisms by which bioactive forage legumes contribute to improve protein use efficiency, reduce methane gas emissions, and inhibit parasitic worms. This position will focus on developing novel assays for polyphenols and tannins in fermented plant samples using a wide range of techniques (nucleophilic degradation, countercurrent chromatography HPLC, LC-MS, 700 MHz NMR, HPLC-GPC, MALDI-TOF MS). It will also investigate oxidative reactions between tannins and proteins, in order to probe their biological effects. Close collaboration via two 2-month secondments will take place with other project partners to set up and optimise oxidative reaction conditions.

Candidates must be highly motivated, hold a PhD (doctoral) degree in Chemistry or have at least 4 years of full time research experience. In total, they must not have more than 5 years of research experience.
