Our group studies the molecular and cellular bases of bacterial infections. Invasive pathogenic bacteria have evolved intriguing means and ways to sabotage our innate immune system. An understanding of these mechanisms may help devising innovative therapeutic or prophylactic interventions in order to deal with infectious diseases. Capnocytophaga canimorsus are Gram-negative bacteria from the normal oral flora of dogs, which cause rare but very severe infections in humans that have been bitten or simply licked. The most common syndrome is fulminant septicemia with peripheral gangrene. Our previous work has shown that these bacteria escape immune detection and even lead to some immune-suppression. The proposed project aims at identifying the mechanisms underlying these phenomena.
