THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS M. D. ANDERSON CANCER CENTER Department of Head and Neck Surgery Position Description Molecular and Clinical Epidemiology Post Doctoral Research Fellow Position SUMMARY To work under the direction of the supervising faculty, the candidate conducts postdoctoral-level research in molecular and clinical epidemiology of head and neck cancer. He/she uses multidisciplinary approaches to investigate the impact of individual predisposition to head and neck cancer development and prognosis. Successful identification of individual susceptible factors could be applied to preventive screening or early detection/treatment for patients at high-risk. The duties of this position include: •To work with the molecular epidemiologist at M. D. Anderson and assist him with molecular and clinical epidemiological research as well as independently complete a research project, as outlined by the supervising faculty •To develop independently new biomarkers for cancer risk and clinical outcome of head and neck patients, as directed by the supervising faculty •To work under the direction of the supervising faculty in manuscript/grant preparation and submission in contributing to the field of molecular and clinical epidemiology •To work under the direction of the supervising faculty with ongoing molecular and clinical epidemiological research projects •To participate in the educational activities of head and neck surgery and epidemiology at the U.T. MD Anderson Cancer Center ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: A. Research (100%) 1. To conduct study design, data collection, and data analysis 2. To develop new experimental assays such as genotyping and phenotyping markers 3. To prepare manuscript and present data at national annual meetings 4. To generate preliminary data and prepare grant submission for future grant application such as NIH K07, R21, and R03 5. To develop new methods for data analysis in genome-wide association study 6. To assist the supervising faculty to supervise lab staff, graduate students, and clinical fellows who have interest in cancer prevention research MARGINAL OR PERIODIC FUNCTIONS: Assist faculty and laboratory assistants with entering molecular and clinical research data and specimens, as supervised by the supervising faculty WORKING CONDITIONS: Clinical Research: Clinic, laboratory, office, library, or with consortium of medical programs in the University of Texas system SUPERVISION: Received: Directly from supervising faculty: Dr. Guojun Li, MD, PhD EDUCATION: Required: Doctoral degree EXPERIENCE: Required: Strong background in biology, molecular and cellular biology, and genetics Preferred: Prior experience in epidemiology and biostatistics and proficiency with computer applications in human genomes databases |
