Post-Doctoral Scientist

Compton Laboratory, Berkshire / Pirbright Laboratory, Surrey
37 hours per week

The Institute for Animal Health is a unique national centre which works to enhance the UK capability to contain, control and eliminate viral diseases of animals through innovative bioscience. We support the competitiveness of UK livestock and poultry producers, and improve the quality of life of both animals and people.

You will make a valued contribution to our Avian Virus Disease programme, which explores challenges to poultry health. Using state of the art equipment, dedicated scientists enhance our understanding of virus-host interactions and pathogenicity, to develop control methods.

As a member of the Avian Oncogenic Viruses group, you will play a core role in an exciting project aimed at developing quantitative molecular methods to differentiate multiple viral strains from infected blood samples. You will also examine the molecular determinants of virulence through reverse genetics, gene expression profiles and proteomics. Your responsibilities will be varied – from active research, to publication and presentation.

Qualified with a PhD in a relevant branch of biosciences, your experience in a range of molecular biological skills, including both conventional PCR and quantitative real-time PCR methods, is evidenced by publications. You demonstrate experience in tissue culture and virological methods, together with various immunological methods for detecting viral antigens and measuring immune responses. A basic understanding of proteomics, protein-protein interactions and mass spectrometry is also vital.

With an active interest in carrying out research to find solutions for animal health issues, you are keen to learn and apply new techniques. Equally comfortable working as part of a team and on individual assigned tasks, you have a logical approach to investigating and resolving problems, and a proven ability to communicate results clearly both in person and in writing.
