A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr Alessandro Bianchi to investigate the mechanism of telomere length regulation by telomerase in fission yeast, in collaboration with Prof Antony Carr. This post is funded by Cancer Research UK.

Telomere function in most organisms requires terminal tandemly-arrayed short DNA repeats which are maintained by a specialized ribonucleoprotein enzyme, telomerase.
The regulation of telomerase has implications for human health, affecting both the ageing process and oncogenic transformation.

Telomerase activity can be regulated at several levels, including enzyme biogenesis, nuclear localization, recruitment at telomeres, and modulation of the enzymatic activity. These different levels of regulations are carried out by a large set of proteins, whose action is only partly understood. The project will aim to elucidate the regulation of telomerase in cis at individual telomeres. We will use molecular genetics approaches in the fission yeast model system, as this organism’s telomeric complex has a high degree of resemblance to the mammalian one. We are looking for talented scientists with or without specific yeast experience but with strong motivation and passion to carry out research.
