Research Fellow
Multiphysics Interface Problems
University of Sussex - School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Department of Mathematics
Ref: 465

(Fixed term 3 years full time)

Salary range: starting at £29,972 and rising to £35,788 per annum

Expected start date 01 March 2012 but can be up until 01 August 2012

Numerical analysis and computational methods for interface multi-physics problems

The objective of this fully funded 3-year Postdoctoral fellowship is to study computational methods for the accurate approximation of problems where systems with different physical characteristics are coupled over an interface. More often than not, the interface is moving and the method must then also account for the accurate position of the interface. Effects isolated to the interface such as surface tension or elasticity of membranes will also be accounted for. Typical problems are fluid-structure interaction, multi-fluid flows or free-flow/porous medium coupling arising in the bio-sciences and environmental science. The study will include both development and analysis of the numerical methods and practical implementation in computational codes. Various coupling strategies will be considered depending on whether or not the computational mesh can be fitted to the interface.

The fellowship provides full support that includes salary and some funds for research activities. The project is due to commence March 2012, but the start date for the fellowship is flexible from the 01 March 2012 until the 01 August 2012.

The successful candidate will benefit from interactions with leading applied mathematicians within the Department of Mathematics as well as with researchers in collaborating institutions in France, Sweden and Italy. The Department of Mathematics ranked highly in the 2008 UK RAE, achieving an internationally recognised level. The candidate will pursue independent research in a very active field of research and acquire techniques such as modelling in continuum mechanics, finite element methods, adaptivity, computational fluid/solid mechanics and algorithm development.

Prospective candidates should hold a PhD in Numerical Analysis, Applied Mathematics, Computational Fluid Dynamics and/or other related disciplines.  Candidates should include with their application the following:

Academic CV
Official academic transcripts
Contact details for two suitable referees
A personal statement (500 words maximum) outlining your suitability for the position and your research experience to date relevant to the project.
Application form
Enquiries: All enquiries should be directed to Professor Erik Burman (e.n.burman@sussex.ac.uk)

It is normal to appoint at the first point of the salary scale.

Closing date for applications: 4th January 2012
