job description
The postdoctoral position is a fixed-term post, the chief objective being to qualify the selected candidate for work in senior positions in their disciplines. The term of employment for this position is 3 years. It is not possible for any person to work under more than one temporary appointment as postdoctoral fellow for the same institution.
Description
The Geophysical Institute carries out research and provides education in meteorology, climate, physical and dynamical oceanography and chemical oceanography. The department currently has 17 permanent scientific positions and 13 technical/administrative positions. In addition, there are 11 adjunct professors and around 50 PhD students, postdoctoral fellows and full-time researchers. Increasing sea level is a direct consequence of ongoing and expected, future changes in climate. In order to be able to give best possible projections of global and regional sea level, the underlying mechanisms need to be identified and quantified. Furthermore, global climate models are used to estimate possible changes in future sea level. The postdoctoral fellow will analyse existing changes in sea level based on available observations and theory. The analysis will be focused on, but not limited to, the coast of Northern Europe and the Arctic. The fellow will also use an advanced global climate and ocean circulation model for simulating and analysing future, possible sea level. In addition, the fellow will contribute to the analysis of the ocean circulation in the North Atlantic, with particular focus on time scales from some years to a few decades. Applicants must have achieved a doctorate in oceanography, meteorology, applied mathematics or related disciplines, or have presented the dissertation for assessment by the closing date for applications. It is a prerequisite that the dissertation has been approved before appointment is granted. It is a prerequisite that the postdoctoral fellow has experience in programming and use of numerical climate models, and/or analysis of ocean observations or model output from climate models. It is a clear advantage if the fellow has experience with modelling or analysis of the sea level. The fellow will work in a dynamic research environment at the Geophysical Institute and the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research, requiring both individual and collective working skills. Applicants shall put forward a proposal for a project for qualifying work, including a progress plan. It is a premise that the selected candidate will complete the project within the stipulated period of employment. The project proposal and progress plan shall (sic: form part of) be annexed to the employment contract, and shall include the name of the person who is to be the discipline advisor for the selected candidate. The teaching language will normally be Norwegian. Women in particular are invited to apply. If, in the opinion of the evaluation committee, several applicants have approximately equivalent qualifications, the rules on equal opportunities laid down in the Personnel Regulations for Academic Positions will be applied.
Benefits
Starting salary on grade 57 (code 1352/pay framework 24.1) in the Civil Service pay grade table; currently NOK 456,100 gross p.a.; following ordinary meriting regulations (wage range 57-64). In the case of particularly high qualified applicants a higher salary may be considered.
