About the role
Working as a Senior Scientific Officer in the Chromatin Structure & Mobile DNA Laboratory (CSMDL), you’ll be responsible for providing research support and scientific training, developing scientific projects and assisting the Group Leader in the management of the CSMDL.

Key responsibilities:
General
• Assist in protein crystallography projects in the lab
• Carefully backup and maintain primary X-ray data collected by the members of the laboratory
• Assist junior lab members and collaborators with X-ray data collection, processing, phasing, model building and refinement
• Help provide an interface with the international community to share published data and reagents
• Attend and participate in the lab’s academic activities, e.g. laboratory and journal club meetings, research group meetings
• Help maintain a positive work environment within the lab.
Research
• Undertake research and develop agreed projects in a timely and resource-efficient manner
• Design (following consultation with supervisor) and execute experiments
• Collect and analyse data
• Keep up-to-date with scientific and technological issues, in particular developments in the specific subject area
• Undertake collaborative projects or new projects for which preliminary data are needed to obtain funding support
• Supervise and train where necessary new members of the Research team.
These duties are a guide to the work that you’ll be required to undertake. They may change from time to time in accord with new scientific developments.
About you
You’ll be an effective team player with a proven ability to organise and prioritise your own workload whilst multitasking under considerable pressure.
You should have an excellent work ethic and the ability to carry out work in compliance with COSHH Health and Safety Guidelines within the Laboratory. This should be coupled with the ability to critically analyse results of experiments and make decisions based on data.
With good communication and interpersonal skills, you’ll be able to communicate with a wide range of individuals at varied levels, including others where English is not the first language.
You’ll be willing to learn new skills, help others and work out of hours occasionally, when required (long experiments, synchrotron trips etc.).

Essential Criteria
• A PhD plus postdoctoral experience with prior publications in structural biology
• Proven laboratory bench skills and ability to maintain good laboratory records
• Thorough experience in molecular biology techniques, protein expression, purification, crystallization screening and crystal optimization
• Thorough understanding of protein chemistry techniques and protein characterization
• Experience in protein crystal handling and X-ray data collection at synchrotron facilities
• Thorough understanding of X-ray data processing, crystal structure determination and validation
• Experience in writing research publications.
Desirable Criteria
• An ideal candidate would have held one or more successful postdoctoral positions
• Prior experience in wrangling with problematic X-ray diffraction data (e.g. twinning, pseudotranslation, etc.).
