job description
The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is a world leader in genomic research, with an expanding scientific programme dedicated to understanding gene function in health & disease.
The Pathogen Genomics team, headed by Professor Julian Parkhill, performs large-scale genomic and comparative genomic analyses of bacterial pathogens. The team are investigating a wide range of human and animal pathogens, and currently have over 100 ongoing projects, collaborating widely within the UK and world scientific community. The team has sequenced the genomes of organisms that are of fundamental importance for human health including the causative agents of; tuberculosis, malaria, plague, typhoid fever, sleeping sickness, whooping cough, dengue fever, leprosy, diphtheria and meningitis. Our primary current interests are using new sequencing technologies to investigate bacterial populations to understand transmission and evolution. We also apply high-throughput technologies to the analysis of bacterial phenotypes.
We have recently received MRC funding for a Postdoctoral Scientist, within the Pathogen Genomics team, to work on antibiotic resistance using the latest sequencing technology. The work will involve the investigation of antibiotic resistance mechanisms in pathogenic bacteria, including Salmonella (Typhi and Typhimurium), Enterobacter cloacae, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, and will involve the construction of very large transposon mutant libraries consisting of at least 1 million mutants of each of these bacteria. Transposon Directed Insertion Site-sequencing (TraDIS) will then be used to identify all candidate essential genes, and thereafter to assay simultaneously every gene in the respective genomes for involvement in resistance to a number of different antibiotics. This involves mapping the TraDIS sequence reads to reference genomes using in-house software and large computer clusters running the UNIX operating system.
