PhD/Postdoctoral Research Position
Molecular Cell Biology/Nanoscopy in Alzheimer’s disease research
Description
The department of Molecular and Developmental Genetics (VIB-KULeuven), headed by Prof. Bart De Strooper, is a vibrant and international research centre where key issues relevant for the major human health challenges are tackled. The laboratory for Membrane Trafficking (Prof. Wim Annaert) studies the assembly and localization of γ-secretase, a tetrameric enzyme complex critically involved in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease. The two homologuous presenilins the catalytic subunit of γ-secretase and the several isoforms of the structural subunit Aph1 give rise to distinctly composed complexes. The project will be focused on the cell biology of this complex heterogeneity and how this may underlie substrate and/or cleavage specificity. Specifically, we aim to unravel the regulatory mechanisms determining the sorting, endosomal localization and nanodomain association of distinct complexes vs substrates in cells and primary hippocampal neurons using the most upfront technologies in molecular biology and nanoscopy.
Profile
We seek an ambitious PhD or postdoctoral fellow to implement superresolution confocal imaging (PALM) In our Alzheimer’s disease research program. Candidates should have already a track record in confocal imaging or related techniques with substantial insights in molecular cell biology. Experience in superresolution microscopy or being passionate about imaging is an advantage. Further on-site training in PALM microscopy is assured through a collaboration with Prof. Johan Hofkens (Sciences&Technology, Laboratory of Molecular & Nanomaterials, KULeuven). The ability to work in a multidisciplinary research team as well as effective communication skills and a good mastery of the English language are essential for a successful selection.
Offer
Financial support is available but the successful candidate is encouraged to obtain an independent fellowship (Marie-Curie, EMBO, or National funding organizations) during this time.
How to apply?
Application (letter of motivation), CV and contact information for three references should be sent to wim.annaert@cme.vib-kuleuven.be
