job description

Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology
School of Public Health

Research Associate
Salary Range: £27,400 – £39,920 p.a.

Applications are invited to join the Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology located at St Mary’s Campus, Paddington. The Department is based within a five star research institute equipped with the latest technologies and facilities.

We are seeking a Research Associate to work with Professor Simon Gregson on the Manicaland HIV/STD Prevention Study, a programme of scientific research on the epidemiology, socio-demographic impact, and control of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Zimbabwe. The research programme draws upon data collected in an established population cohort of approximately 10,000 adults, parallel serial antenatal clinic surveillance surveys, and ancillary surveys and qualitative data collection undertaken in small towns, commercial farms, roadside trading centres and subsistence farming villages in Manicaland, Zimbabwe’s eastern province. These data are collected through a collaborative partnership with the Biomedical Research and Training Institute in Harare and are analysed using a range of statistical and mathematical modelling techniques. Findings from the studies are disseminated and utilised at local, national and international levels through collaborative arrangements with NGOs, the Zimbabwe Ministry of Health and Child Welfare, CDC Zimbabwe and UNAIDS. Five rounds of phased data collection have been completed to date (2 years each) and a further round is scheduled to start in 2012. Currently particular attention is being paid to studies of the temporal dynamics of the epidemic and their implications for the design of effective HIV/AIDS control interventions against a background of increasing access to voluntary counselling and testing services and anti-retroviral therapy.

The post holder will be stationed in London and will be responsible for assisting with analyses and modelling of the project data under the direction of the programme director and in collaboration with the other scientific investigators.

Applicants should have a PhD or equivalent in one or more of the following areas: epidemiology, demography, statistics, mathematics or a related quantitative discipline, should have expertise in managing large complex databases, and should be motivated, well organised and able to work effectively as part of a team.

The post is full time for a fixed-term until 30 June 2013 in the first instance.
For informal enquiries please contact Professor Simon Gregson: s.gregson@imperial.ac.uk or sajgregson@aol.com
