In the solar cell department at imec, we aim at developing low-cost, scalable, high-efficiency solar cell technologies, thereby leveraging maximally the supporting skills present at imec around semiconductor physics, technology and analysis. The solar cell department comprises about 80 people and is one of the strongest growing domains within imec. We have recently started expanding our research horizon, amongst others in the field of advanced module concepts, and we are presently looking for a postdoctoral researcher to work on the metallization and interconnection for PV modules based on ultrathin crystalline Si wafers.

Job description

You will work together in a team of researchers focusing on the development of a novel type of PV module based on thin (thickness well below 100 µm) back junction crystalline silicon solar cells. Within this team, you will take up the responsibility for the development and implementation of advanced metallization and cell interconnection schemes. The novelty of our module approach lies in the fact that the backside of the thin Si solar cells is processed at module level, such that the cell metallization and cell interconnection can be done simultaneously. In this way, the breakage risk of the thin Si wafers is greatly reduced since the wafers are already bonded to the module glass during back side processing.

Profile

- You have a PhD degree (or comparable through proven experience) in Electronics, Material Science or Photovoltaics.
- You have relevant experience in device manufacturing and metallization, and a good insight in device physics.
- You are a team player and have excellent communication skills.
- You are fluent in English.

This postdoctoral position is funded by the K.U.Leuven university and has been initiated to stimulate international mobility for postdocs. Because of the specific financing statute, only candidates who did not obtain their PhD degree from a Belgian university can be considered for the position. Applicants who stayed or worked/studied in Belgium for more than 24 months in the past 3 years cannot be considered either (short stays such as holiday, participation in conferences, etc are not taken into account).
