Job Description

The mission of the Palo Alto Institute for Research and Education, Inc. (PAIRE) is to facilitate research and education activities conducted at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS). The range of research activities is broad and includes special emphasis on biomedical, health services, rehabilitation engineering, mental health and geriatric research endeavors. We also support various educational instruction or other learning experiences of benefit to employees and veterans.

PAIRE, a nonprofit foundation affiliated with the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS), is seeking a Life Sciences Postdoctoral Fellow to conduct science on studies of transcriptional regulation of LDL receptor and PPAR and the functional roles of PPAR in hepatic lipid metabolism.

The ideal candidate will possess a Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or related scientific field.

Duties:

• Characterize cellular genes that are regulated by diets, natural lipid lowering compounds, and cytokines in liver tissues, primary hepatocytes, and liver-derived cell lines;
• Promoter analysis to identify critical cis-acting elements and trans-acting factors that play important roles in PPAR gene expression and regulation in liver cells;
• Utilize hyperlipidemic animal models including rats, hamsters, and mice to study the in vivo function of PPAR in liver lipid metabolism;
• Utilizing transgenic mouse model to examine the regulation of hepatic LDLR and PPAR expression;
• Participate in general laboratory maintenance;
• Maintain detailed experimentation records in notebook and in computer files;
• Participate in manuscript preparation and conference presentation.

Requirements:

• Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or related scientific field;
• Prior working experience with animals;
• Skilled in cloning and various biochemical assays;
• Prior working experience with transgenic mice;
• Proven knowledge of molecular and cellular biology;
• Advanced knowledge of research methodology and lab safety procedures;
• Good communication skills, both in writing and speaking.

Postdoctoral Fellows are those who receive a postdoctoral fellow appointment from Stanford University. This appointment affords certain privileges at Stanford University, such as email account and housing information. Postdoctoral Fellows are eligible for health benefits through PAIRE but are not eligible for paid leave benefits, pension, or match in the PAIRE Retirement Plan. Postdocs may, however, defer to our 401(k) Retirement Plan.
