job description
Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Infection, Inflammation & Immunity
Location: Southampton General Hospital
Salary: £27,428 to £30,870
Full Time Fixed Term until 30/09/2014
Closing Date: Thursday 10 November 2011
Interview Date: To be confirmed
Reference: 056711FC
Applications are invited for Postdoctoral Research Fellowship between the School of Medicine and Biological Sciences funded up to 30 September 2014.
This research position is funded by a programme called U-BIOPRED (Unbiased Biomarkers for the Prediction of Respiratory Disease Outcomes) (http://www.fp7-consulting.be/en/ubiopred/), a consortium of partners from academia (20), biopharma industry (EFPIA) (9), patients/care organisations (6), SMEs (4) and multinational industry (1). UBIOPRED aims to discover new diagnostic and prognostic markers associated with severe asthma. The post offers a unique and exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and ambitious post-doctoral fellow to develop further skills and contribute to a step change in the understanding and management of asthma working in state of the art laboratories based within the Centre for Proteomic Research and interacting with first class scientists and clinicians both locally, in Southampton, and internationally via the consortium.
The principle goal will be to derive mass spectrometric data from clinical samples that can subsequently be used to identify peptides/proteins that are candidate biomarkers. The post will entail organization and archiving samples and associated information, method optimization and mass spectrometric analysis of the samples using both LC-MS and MS/MS approaches, processing the resulting MS data, transmission of processed data to other researchers in the consortium and validation studies on potential proteomic biomarkers.
Previous experience in mass spectrometry and an ability to process and interpret MS data are essential requirements for this post. The successful candidate will ideally have good experience of developing and using HPLC or related systems, as well as experience of using robotic liquid handling systems. Demonstrated abilities to communicate well, write clearly, work within a team and maintain good laboratory records are also essential. This post will require the successful candidate to be CRB checked at enhanced level.
Informal enquiries should be made to Professor Ratko Djukanovic, (e-mail: r.djukanovic@soton.ac.uk) Director of the Division, and to Professor C. D. O’Connor, (e-mail: doc1@soton.ac.uk), Director of the Centre for Proteomic Research.
The closing date for this post is 10 November 2011. Please apply online through www.jobs.soton.ac.uk or alternatively telephone 023 8059 2750 for an application form. Please quote vacancy reference number 056711FC on all correspondence.
We aim to be an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all sections of the community. Please note that applications from agencies will not be accepted unless indicated in the job advert.
