Postdoctoral Position

Role of Gut Microbiota in Shaping Severity of Malaria

A postdoctoral fellow position, supported by an NIH R01 grant, is available starting immediately in the laboratory of Dr. Nathan W. Schmidt, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, University of Louisville, Louisville KY. The research focus is on malaria pathogenesis. In particular, we are interested in understanding how gut microbiota modulates the host immune response to Plasmodium, using the murine model of malaria with a goal of extending these studies to humans.

The position is for an entry-level, or experienced, postdoctoral fellow position. The main objective of this position is to determine the mechanisms by which the gut microbiota determines susceptibility to severe malaria. The position will have a mentor.

The successful candidate will conduct research projects, analyze data, write manuscripts and is expected to carry out his or her projects independently. Applicants should have a PhD, MD/PhD, or equivalent degree in immunology or microbiology. Experience and background in one or more of the following: cellular immunology, flow cytometry, animal models and microbial community analysis via next-generation sequencing, is highly desired. In addition, the applicant should be self-motivated, hard working, a model lab citizen, and willing to work with flexible hours.

This search will begin immediately and will end when the position is filled. Qualified applicants must apply online at www.louisville.edu to Job #35943, as well as submit a cover letter describing previous research experience and current interests, curriculum vitae including publication list, and contact details of three references to Dr. Nathan W. Schmidt by email at nathan.schmidt@louisville.edu.

The University of Louisville is an Affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity, Americans with Disabilities Employer, committed to community engagement and diversity, and in that spirit, seeks applications from a broad variety of candidates.
